Public safety to be ensured during Christmas, New Year celebrations: DMP Commissioner

DHAKA, Dec 18, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali said that ensuring public safety while maintaining normal public movement will be the top priority during Christmas and the upcoming English New Year celebrations.

"We have been entrusted with ensuring public safety and maintaining normal law and order during the twin celebrations of Christmas and the upcoming English New Year," he said. 

He made the remarks at a coordination meeting held at the DMP Headquarters on the occasion of Christmas-the largest religious festival of the Christian community and the farewell to the outgoing year. 

The DMP Chief emphasized that security measures must not disrupt the normal flow of city life and assured that adequate arrangements have been taken so that Christmas can be celebrated in an atmosphere of religious solemnity and festivity.

According to DMP, Christmas-related religious programs will be held in 73 churches across Dhaka Metropolitan City. To prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation, cyber patrolling has been strengthened, alongside enhanced intelligence surveillance.

The DMP Commissioner also warned of strict vigilance around celebrations on the 31st Night, urging citizens to remain cautious and cooperative. 

He specifically requested the city residents to refrain from motorcar racing, stating that vehicles involved in racing on the night of December 31 will be seized.

At the meeting, Additional Police Commissioner (Administration) Md. Sarwar, Additional Inspector General, said that prior permission must be obtained for organizing any event on the 31st Night. 

Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S. N. Md. Nazrul Islam stressed that there would be zero tolerance regarding security lapses and that the sale and use of firecrackers and explosives would remain prohibited.

Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam also urged the public to avoid fireworks and flying lanterns during New Year celebrations.

The meeting was attended by leaders of the Christian community, Additional Police Commissioner (Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime) Md. Masud Karim, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Anisur Rahman, representatives of various organizations, DMP Joint Commissioners, Deputy Police Commissioners, and officers-in-charge of concerned police stations.
