CHATTOGRAM, Nov 28, 2025 (BSS) - Railways, Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan today said traffic congestion cannot be solved simply by widening roads and at least 20 percent of passenger and goods transport should be shifted to rail and waterways to ease pressure on highways,.

He made the remarks at an exchange meeting with officials of the Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Railway at the Roads Building in the Agrabad area of the city.

Fouzul said a multimodal transport policy will be implemented, integrating roads, railways, and inland waterways.

Pointing out that highway widening often leads to increased traffic, he stressed that road construction must be justified based on economic and social importance. He added that unnecessary road projects undertaken in the past will no longer be allowed.

The adviser said work on the new Kalurghat Bridge is underway, though river dynamics pose challenges. He also noted that risky bends on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway will soon be straightened, with the tender process already completed.

Fouzul emphasized the importance of using resources efficiently, noting that land acquisition must be handled carefully as land has many competing needs.
