Govt to repair 12,531 schools to be used as polling centres

DHAKA, Nov 25, 2025 (BSS) – The government has approved a plan to repair and renovate 12,531 government primary schools that will serve as polling centres during the upcoming national parliament elections.

According to a letter issued by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Directorate of Primary Education has allocated Tk 41.12 crore to carry out renovation work at these educational institutions.

Upazila-level officials have been authorized to use the funds.

The allocation will come from the project titled ‘Other Buildings and Structures Sector’ involving Tk 80 crore under the current 2025-26 fiscal year budget.

The letter further stated that all officials must strictly follow government financial regulations and maintain proof of VAT payments. All bills and vouchers must be preserved for audit purposes.

If the work is not completed within the stipulated time, the concerned upazila primary education officer, head teacher and school management committee members will be held responsible. It also mentioned that any unspent funds must be returned to the government exchequer by June 30, 2026.

It has been observed that many of these schools do not have foundation or boundary walls, and numerous doors and windows are in a dilapidated condition, which may pose security risks if used as polling stations.

In view of the situation, the Adviser to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has recently issued a demi-official (DO) letter to the Finance Ministry, seeking an additional Tk 124 crore for the renovation and repair of these primary schools.
