RANGPUR, Oct 28, 2025 (BS) - Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Vice-
Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Showkat Ali today said that the Martyr Abu Sayeed Memorial will be a
unique symbol of keeping our independence and democratic spirit alive.
"Martyr Abu Sayeed is a heroic son of the democratic movement of Bangladesh.
Through the construction of his memorial, the university family and the
people of the whole country will be able to know his contribution in a new
way," he said.
At the same time, the aesthetics of the university campus will also increase.
He said this while presiding over a meeting organised at the university's
syndicate meeting room to display the 3D model of the Martyr Abu Sayeed
Memorial, to be built at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square, with the support of the
Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Ziauddin
Ahmed, was present at the meeting.
In his welcome speech, Ziauddin Ahmed said, the nation remembers the
contribution of the first martyr of the July Movement, Abu Sayeed, with deep
respect.
"The initiative to build the Martyr Abu Sayeed Memorial, which has been taken
in honor of his outstanding sacrifice, will not only be an architectural
monument, but it will also play a role in inspiring the coming generation to
know history and be patriotic," he said.
He further said that the final design will be selected from the three
displayed designs of the Martyr Abu Sayeed Memorial based on the opinions of
the teachers and students of Begum Rokeya University and concerned parties.
He expressed hope that the construction work will start in the next fiscal
year after completing all the processes.
Deans, registrar, heads of different departments of BRUR, Rangpur Deputy
Commissioner as well as its architects and engineers and teachers, students,
officers, employees of various faculties of the university were present at
the meeting.
