DHAKA, Oct 27, 2025 (BSS)- Health experts at a workshop today that the high blood pressure control rate in some regions of the country increased from 15 percent to 56 percent between 2019 and 2025, which is hopeful.
Bangladesh has recently emerged as a successful example in the World Health Organization's second global report on high blood pressure, they said adding a quarter of the country's population still suffers from the disease.
They made the comments at a workshop titled ‘Controlling High Blood Pressure in Bangladesh: Progress, Obstacles and Doings’ held at the BMA Bhaban in the capital.
The workshop was organized by Pragya (Knowledge for Progress) in collaboration with the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI). A total of 23 journalists from print, television and online media outlets participated in the workshop.
The speakers said despite a progress in controlling of blood pressure, Bangladesh must implement more actions for handling the non-commutable disease as the country already recorded a significant number of patients linked to high blood pressure.
At the workshop, the speakers observed that high blood pressure already emerged as a serious public health problem in the country.
At the workshop, Deputy Director of the Directorate General of Health Services, Dr. Muhammad Habibur Rahman, said, “We are facing some budgetary and management constraints in providing medicines for high blood pressure and other non-communicable diseases. Hopefully, we will be able to overcome these soon.”
Deputy General Manager (Sales and Marketing) of Essential Drugs Company Limited, Md. Riyad Arefin, said, “We always try to ensure timely supply of high blood pressure medicines to NCD corners and community clinics for marginalized people at rural and hard-reach areas in the country.
Dhaka Tribune Editor Riaz Ahmed, GHAI Bangladesh Country Lead Muhammad Ruhul Quddus and Pragya Executive Director ABM Zubair were present as discussants in the workshop.
Pragya Coordinator Sadia Galiba Probha gave a thematic presentation in the workshop.
