Upcoming election an opportunity to restore police image: IGP

DHAKA, Oct 27, 2025 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam today said that the upcoming national parliamentary election is a chance to rebuild the public trust in police. 
  
“Election is a major challenge for the Bangladesh Police, but also an opportunity to rebuild public trust and overcome past negative perceptions,” he said.

The police chief made the remarks while presiding over a Special Crime Review Meeting at the Hall of Pride of the Police Headquarters, said a press release. 

“The elections are a big opportunity to get out of the negative image that has been created in the public mind about the police. Everyone should make efforts to gain the trust of the people by utilizing this opportunity,” he said. 

Alam directed police to intensify recovery of looted weapons, gather intelligence, and increase publicity on the Home Ministry’s reward for weapon recovery. 

He also instructed unit heads to strengthen election training, ensure timely police clearance certificates without harassment, file cases based on complaints Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, and prioritize investigations into cases from the anti-discrimination movement.

He further stressed improving investigation quality and maintaining professionalism. 

Police commissioners, DIGs, and SPs exchanged views with the IGP on administrative and operational matters during the meeting.

The meeting was attended by DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General (DG) AKM Shahidur Rahman, Special Branch (SB) Chief Md. Golam Rasul, Additional IGPs, and heads of various police units. All range DIGs and district SPs joined the meeting virtually.

Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam presented the overall law and order and crime situation.
