HC forms committee to probe allegation of custodial death in Rangpur

DHAKA, Dec 8, 2021 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today formed a three-member committee led by a District and Sessions Judge to probe the alleged custodial death of one Tajul Islam in Haragach union under Kaunia upazila in Rangpur on November 1.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman today came up with the order, asking the committee to submit its report within next 15 days.

The court on November 3 had sought police report on its investigation over the alleged custodial death as Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua brought the matter to court's attention and pleaded for necessary direction.

According to the allegation, Police conducted a raid in Tepothi intersection in Haragach town area on the evening of November 1. They detained Tajul with some drugs and beaten him black and blue. As Tajul became senseless, police threw him on a wall, leaving him dead on the spot.

The mob got agitated after that and attacked local police station.

   Police, however, denied the allegation.
