DHAKA, Oct 22, 2025 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).  

BMU Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam and WHO Representative in Bangladesh Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed signed the agreement on behalf of the respective organizations at BMU Vice Chancellor’s  office at Shahbagh .  

In accordance with the agreement, the WHO will provide the necessary technical support for BMU's infection prevention and control, said a press release. 

The aim of this agreement is to reduce healthcare-associated infections and improve the safety of patients and health workers by implementing a multimodal infection division 3 control (IPC) strategy.

The overall objective of this agreement is to strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC) practices within the BMU system through technical cooperation with the WHO to reduce healthcare-associated infections. 

In particular, the WHO will provide support in providing technical assistance, capacity building and training, monitoring, evaluation, knowledge sharing, technical skills development, supervision, etc.

BMU Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam said that the Bangladesh Medical University has taken very conscious and effective steps in infection prevention and control system. 

BMU has a high-level committee for infection prevention and control, and a separate allocation has been made in the annual budget of BMU, he said. 

The BMU is not only in this university for infection prevention and control; rather, it is ready to work as a model institution in this activity nationwide, he added.

He said that currently BMU is making an outstanding contribution to the quality change in the health sector, especially in higher medical education. 

“If BMU is given all the possible facilities provided by the World Health Organization, this university will move further in medical education, medical services and research,” he said.

At the event, WHO Representative in Bangladesh Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed said that Bangladesh Medical University will be provided with necessary support in infection prevention and control activities. 

At the same time, he mentioned that the organization is also interested in providing necessary support including the existing facilities of the World Health Organization to develop BMU as a centre and institution of excellence along with improving the quality of services.
