‘Most people in Bangladesh at risk of Iodine Deficiency Diseases'

DHAKA, Oct 18, 2025 (BSS) - Arpita Das was not getting much strength in her body for some while. She was feeling dizzy and her body shook most of the time. Her husband Ratul Das thought that these symptoms might be caused from diabetes. He was thinking about taking her to a doctor when time would permit. But one day Arpita fainted to the ground succumbed to high dizziness. She was vomiting much.

Arpita was taken to a hospital immediately. After four days of treatment she came to home. But she fell sick again within a month. She was taken to a medicine expert. One year of treatment under that expert could not stop her shakiness and her heartbeat was not normal. Ratul became worried.

Arpita was treated by another expert after this. Doctor checked her past records. He wanted to know as if ft3, ft4 & tsh of blood was checked up. He told her to submit those reports and made her sure that she had problem in thyoroid gland.

After the test, doctor confirmed that Arpita was suffering from Thayatoxicosis. Doctor prescribed her some medicine and advised her to eat iodine salt and sea fishes. By following these prescriptions, Arpita was fully recovered within six months.

Thayatoxicosis is a hormone based illness. It is caused mainly by a lack of iodine in the body. This disease can cause death to a human by increasing blood pressure and heart beat. Apart from this, normal growth of a human being is suppressed for lack of iodine. Lack of iodine causes the consistent growth of brain. This disease causes complicated symptoms to the pregnant women, who can give birth to disabled children.

The Iodine problem is not only a problem in Bangladesh, it is a massive problem in the world too. Everyday a person needs at least 0.075 milligram of iodine. Most of the iodine we can get from the salt. Apart from the salt, we also can get iodine from earth, water and some kinds of botanies.

A research has revealed that 49 per cent of the iodine salts in the market do not contain the prescribed amount of iodine in our country. Hence, most of the populations of Bangladesh are in the acute trouble of being affected by the Iodine Deficiency Diseases (IDD).
