DU observes first-ever Autumn fest with stunning performances

DHAKA, Oct 16, 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka University today arranged the first ever Shorot Utsab (Autumn Festival) as a part of celebrating the seasons of country and reviving the old tradition.

The fest was arranged on the historic Bakultala premises of the fine arts faculty of the Dhaka University this afternoon.

The event came to effect with the participation of Fine Art faculty, Dance department, Music department, Theater and Performance Studies department, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and representatives from hall unions.

Dhaka University and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs jointly organized the fest for the first time on the campus.  

The event place was decorated with symbolic white heron, white cloud and kashful identical to the thematic characters of the autumn session.

DU vice chancellor (acting) Prof. Sayema Haque Bidisha inaugurated the event.

Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarker, joint convener of DU Sada Dal, Chairman of Drawing and Painting department Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Ali, chairman of Printmaking department Md. Nazir Hossain Khan, Proctor, Saifuddin Ahmed, Law faculty dean Dr Mohammad Towhidul Islam, Arts faculty dean prof. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan were present during the inauguration.

Different types of performances including poem recitation, singing songs, dance performances, were held during the six-hour 
fest. 

Inaugurating the event, Prof. Sayema emphasized the cultural and emotional importance of such events.

She said, “Today’s event is important for various reasons. Such fests create connections among people from different walks of life because such festivals bring us close to our dearest ones”

“In today’s fast-paced urban life, festivals like these offer rare moments to reconnect with loved ones. We bring time in this mechanical city and busy life,” she said, adding that marking the event as a bridge between city people with urban and new cultures with old traditions. 

Following the occasion, paintings and artworks, depicting the beauty of autumn season, were displayed at the premises. 

Speaking at the event Dance department chairman Tamanna Rahman said, “Bangladesh is bestowed upon Shararitu (six seasons) and autumn is the prettiest and the calmest of them.”

“This year we are celebrating the autumn fest for the first time and expecting to celebrate all the six seasons of Bangla calendar regularly,” She added

Prof. Kalam Sarkar also stressed the need to arrange such events on a regular basis and to allocate funds for the festivals that are related to our culture and help our culture to flourish.

Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, “With cordial supports of teachers, government and the fine art faculty, we managed to arrange the event in a very short time. I believe, the cultural ministry will help us in all way from the next time.” 

DUCSU cultural affairs secretary Mosaddeq Ali Ibne Mohammad thanked all and said the union is committed to arrange such events that allows people from all walks of life to connects.
