Police taking preparations to help hold next polls peacefully: IGP

DHAKA, Aug 11, 2025 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said police are taking preparations to help hold the upcoming parliamentary election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. 
 
"Our main target is the next election...We're preparing for that," he told BSS here recently.
  
As part of holding the election peacefully, the government has taken a number of steps including deployment of eight lakh members of different law enforcing agencies.

 They are- police, Ansar, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). 

Besides, training of the law enforcement personnel, who will be on-duty during the election period, has already been started. 

The ansar personnel will be deployed to protect presiding officers during the upcoming parliamentary polls.

According to the ministry of home affairs, the government is going to procure 40,000 body-worn cameras ahead of the election as they have a plan to give the camera to a senior police officer in 47,000 polling centres to get real-time updates from the polling station.

It (government) is expected to announce a bounty soon for providing information leading to recovery of approximately 700 missing police firearms of police which were looted after August 5 last year. 
 
A total of 5,750 firearms and 651,609 rounds of ammunition were looted from various police stations, outposts and other installations after the dislodging of the Awami League government in face of a Mass Uprising of the student-people, sources said.
 
The seized arms and ammunition included rifles, sub-machine guns (SMGs), light machine guns (LMGs), pistols, shotguns, gas guns, tear gas launchers, tear gas shells, tear gas sprays, sound grenades and bullets.

The government has started a joint operation to recover the looted arms and ammunition since September 4 last year.

The Police headquarters sources said they have played a significant role in bringing back normalcy in public life from the adverse situation created immediately after the Awami League government was ousted in the face of Mass Uprising.

To maintain the law and order and recover the looted firearms of the law enforcers, the police have initiated nationwide special drive against the criminals soon after the August 5 last and it is now continuing.

The police have vowed to continue the nationwide operation until the next election to maintain law and order and ensuring public safety.
