CHATTOGRAM, May 24, 2025 (BSS) - Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) has officially launched an independent pediatric kidney ward, marking a significant step forward in specialized healthcare for children in the region.

After more than a decade, the government hospital will provide uninterrupted services to child and youth patients suffering from pediatric kidney disease.

The new ward, located on the second floor of the hospital, was formally inaugurated today.

Pediatric kidney doctor Professor Mohammad Hanif was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony. Departmental head of the pediatric kidney ward, Professor Dr. Sanat Kumar Barua, presided over the function.

Professor Hanif highlighted the growing prevalence of kidney disease among children in Bangladesh, stressing the urgent need for dedicated treatment facilities.

"The launch of this separate ward at CMCH marks a new chapter in pediatric healthcare," he said. "This development will not only raise the standard of treatment but also reduce the reliance on hospitals in Dhaka for specialized care."

The journey toward this achievement began in December 2013, when CMCH initially introduced a kidney treatment service for children within its general child health ward. Starting with just 11 beds inside Ward No. 8, the capacity was later expanded to 15.

However, due to the lack of a dedicated ward, young kidney patients had to share space with others, posing increased risks and discomfort.

Responding to the rising patient load and the need for safer, more focused care, CMCH took the initiative to create a separate ward. The infrastructure for the facility was completed about three months ago, according to hospital sources.

Dr. Maruf ul Kader of Pediatric Kidney Disease Department at CMCH Hospital said, "Until now, we have been providing limited treatment to pediatric kidney patients within the pediatric ward. Now, with a separate ward, it will be much easier to provide children with a safe environment and advanced treatment."

Brigadier General Md. Taslim Uddin, director of CMCH, noted that the project was part of a longstanding plan. "We are committed to improving patient care through better infrastructure and services. The launch of this ward is a reflection of that commitment," he said.

CMCH Deputy Director Dr. Mohammad Ilias Chowdhury, its Vice Principal Professor Dr. Abdur Rob, Head of Pediatrics Department of Marine City Hospital, Professor Dr. Basna Muhuri, Head of the Department of Kidney, Professor Dr. Nurul Huda, Head of the Department of Child Health and Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Musa Mia, among others addressed the function.
