Govt to regulate vehicular movements on highways to ensure safe Eid journey

DHAKA, May 21, 2025 (BSS) – Vehicles carrying sacrificial animals will ply on the left side of the highways to make the journey of the home-bound people safe, smooth and free from traffic jams on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Aazha.

The Road Transport and Highways Division (RTHD) in a meeting today also decided not lease out 217 identified spots on or near the highways for setting up makeshift cattle markets and entrances of the cattle markets will be set in the opposite sides of the roads.

RTHD Senior Secretary Md Ehsanul Haque chaired the meeting in which a series of decisions were taken to ensure safe journey of Eid holyday-makers.

Road renovation activities under the national highways and important corridors will be completed seven days before the Eid and development work on all highways, including Dhaka-Rangpur and Dhaka-Sylhet, will be stopped for seven days during the Eid period.

The meeting said that banners should be used in front of trucks carrying sacrificial animals and no passenger will be allowed to travel by those trucks.

“Necessary measures will be taken to stop extortion at bus terminals and highways and prevent theft, robbery, snatching, pick-pocketing and violence,” it said.

The meeting also instructed the people concerned to ensure controlling speed limits of vehicles on roads and highways to prevent accidents.

Movement of all three-wheelers including Nasimon, Karimon and Easy-Bike will remain stopped on the national and regional highways. Temporary markets will be removed from the both sides of the roads.

Mobile courts will be conducted in motor repair workshops from ten days before of the Eid to stop movement of unfit and defective vehicles.

Mobile courts will also be operated along with forming monitoring teams to resolve traffic jams at 149 identified spots of the roads and highways.

Effective steps will be taken to prevent charging of extra fare and transportation of additional passengers at all bus terminals in the country. ETC booths will remain open round the clock to keep toll plazas free from traffic jams on all bridges.

On the occasion of the Eid, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will operate special Eid services from Dhaka to various districts, cities and important places.

On the Eid day, trucks, covered vans and lorries will not be allowed to run on the highways.

In case of serious accidents on the roads, emergency medical and ambulance facilities will be provided in public and private hospitals with the help of 999.

On the occasion of the Eid, filling stations will remain open round the clock for seven days before and five days after the Eid.

Adequate number of ferries will be arranged for crossing rivers. A central control room will be set up one day before the Eid and holidays.

Adequate number of security personnel will be deployed at each cattle market under the management of the Lessees.

Apart from this, concerned city corporations or district mobile courts and police will take necessary measures to ensure proper functioning of cattle markets.
