HC wants police probe report on 'custodial death' in Rangpur

     DHAKA, Nov 3, 2021 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today sought police 
report on investigation over the alleged custodial death of one Tajul Islam 
in Haragach union under Kaunia upazila in Rangpur, by November 11.

     The court asked Rangpur police commissioner to submit the probe report 
along with the postmortem report, before the court and set November 15 for 
passing further order in this regard.

     A High Court division bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and 
Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman today came up with the suo moto order as 
Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Amit Das Gupta filed the initial police report 
over the death.

     Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua yesterday brought the 
matter to court's attention and pleaded for necessary direction. The court 
after that had asked the DAG to inform it about the police report.

     According to the allegation, police conducted a raid in Tepothi 
intersection in Haragach town area on the evening of November 1. They 
detained Tajul with some drugs and beaten him black and blue. As Tajul became 
senseless, police threw him on a wall, leaving him dead on the spot. 

     The mob got agitated after that and attacked the local police station.

     A four-member committee has been formed by police to probe the incident.
