Government works for sustainable development: Nanak

DHAKA, June 11, 2024 (BSS) – Textiles and Jute Minister and Awami League Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak today said the country is moving forward tremendously as the incumbent government, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is working for the sustainable development of the country.

“Infrastructure development in 100 economic zones has proved that the government is sincerely working for the sustainable development of the country,” he said while addressing the 2nd Bangladesh Circular Economy Summit at Radisson Blu Water Garden here.

The Summit, organised by the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE) in collaboration with German development cooperation agency GIZ and in association with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, highlighted the importance and ways of transitioning from a linear economic model to one that prioritises resource efficiency and waste reduction.

Nanak said, “The apparel entrepreneurs of the country have achieved export targets with their limited resources, and it is admirable.”

The minister said Bangladesh has great potential in the circular economy, as the country is in second place in terms of the production of RMG waste.

All post-industrial waste should be utilised as the key to a circular economy is waste reduction and recycling of the prevailing materials and products. Its aim is also to make more use of limited resources, he added.

Former President of BGMEA and Awami League’s Commerce and Industry Affairs Secretary Siddiqur Rahman, Deputy Head of Mission of the Netherlands in Bangladesh Thijs Woudstra, Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in Bangladesh Jan Janowski, Bangladesh Apparel Exchange Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mostafiz Uddin, and representatives of development partners, among others, were present.
