DGHS driver Malek sentenced to 15-yr imprisonment in arms case

   DHAKA, Sept 20, 2021 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced Directorate

General of Health Services (DGHS) driver Abdul Malek alias Badal to 15-year-
imprisonment in an arms case.

   Judge Robiul Alam of Dhaka Additional 3rd Metropolitan Sessions Judge
Court pronounced the verdict, sentencing him to 15-year-imprisonment each
under two separate sections of the arms act. But as the two sentences would
run concurrently, the convict will have to suffer 15-year jail only.

   The court on September 13 had set today to pronounce the judgement in the
case as both the prosecution and defence concluded their closing arguments on
that day. A total of 13 prosecution witnesses were examined by the court in
the case.

   Investigation officer (IO) and sub-inspector Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury of
RAB-1 filed charge-sheet in the case on January 11, 2021, and the court on
February 14 accepted it. The court on April 4 framed charges in the case.

   Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members on September 20, 2020, detained Malek
for his involvement in businesses of illegal arms, fake notes and other
illegal activities. RAB at the time recovered a foreign-made pistol, one
magazine, five bullets, fake notes of Taka 1.5 lakh, a laptop and a mobile
phone from his possession.

   RAB-1 inspector Alamgir Hossain later filed the arms case against Malek.

   Sub-inspector Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury on January 11, 2021, filed the
charge-sheet in the case and the court on February 14 accepted it. The court
framed charges in the case on April 4.
