SC allows bail to BNP leader Aman in graft case

DHAKA, March 20, 2024 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today granted bail to BNP leader Amanullah Aman in a graft case, in which he was convicted and sentenced to 13-year in prison.

A four-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order after a hearing on a plea filed by the BNP leader.

Dhaka Special Judge Court on June 21, 2007, sentenced Aman to 13 years and his wife to three years imprisonment in the case filed for amassing illegal wealth and concealing information in the wealth statement. Allowing an appeal, filed by the couple, the High Court, however, on August 16, 2010, acquitted them.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) after that filed their appeal, challenging the acquittal order. The Appellate Division on May 26, 2014, scrapped the High Court verdict and ordered fresh hearing on appeal in the case.

A High Court division bench on May 30, 2013, upheld the jail sentences of Aman and his wife in the case, making Aman to file an appeal with the apex court. He filed the bail plea at that time.
