World Thinking Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Feb 21, 2024 (BSS) - The World Thinking Day will be observed in the country tomorrow as elsewhere in the world aiming to build an environmentally sustainable world free from poverty for girls and young women.

This year's theme of the day is 'Our World, Our Thriving Future: The environment and global poverty' selected by World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), an official release said here today.

The World Thinking Day is celebrated annually on February 22 by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

Celebrated since 1926, World Thinking Day is a day of international friendship, according to the website of WAGGGS.

It is an opportunity to speak out on issues that affect young women and fundraise for 8.9 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 152 countries, the website added.

On the eve of the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today greeted the guide members and well-wishers of Bangladesh Girl Guides Association at all levels, including the youth and seniors.

Bangladesh Girl Guides Association was established in independent Bangladesh with the aim of self-improvement of women under the direct supervision of the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the premier said.

Bangladesh Girl Guides Association has been celebrating this day since the country's independence in 1971, she added.

She believed that girls and young women will become eligible citizens by participating in various programs in the country and abroad by taking 'guiding' as a vow along with institutional education.

In order to meet the challenges of development and the century, the youth as well as the young women must come forward equally, she stressed.

Noting that the progress of development is not possible leaving behind the women-manpower of the country, she hoped that Bangladesh Girl Guides Association would play an important role as a supporting force of the government on the highway of development.

The premier wished all the programmes undertaken on the occasion of the World Thinking Day-2024 a success.
