4 JU students arrested over gang rape allegation on campus

SAVAR, Feb 4, 2024 (BSS)-Four students of Jahangirnagar University were arrested today for their alleged involvement in raping a woman on the campus last night.

The incident which was took place on Saturday night at around 9:30 pm near the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall’s adjacent forest.

The arrested prime accused are-Mostafizur Rahman, Sabbir Hasan, Shagor Siddik and Hasan-Uz-Zaman.

Abdullah Hil Kafi, Dhaka district's additional police super (Crime and Ops and Traffic north), confirmed the matter through a press conference today.

Mostafizur was the BCL unit's international affairs secretary and a student of the international relations department.

Earlier, Savar thana police recorded the victim’s statement for the further investigation.

According to the statement, the international affairs secretary of the JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League Mustafizur Rahman and Mamun raped the woman at a forest area on the campus at about 9:00pm.

During the time, husband of the victim was confined at a room of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall that the hall unit BCL allegedly use it as a torture cell.  

When they released the man around one and a half hours later, the man found his wife ravaged in front of the hall.

Meanwhile, some seven to eight BCL men forced the couple to leave the campus and beat the man while he tried to protest the gruesome incident.

Later, the couple lodged a complaint with Savar Model Police Station and a team of the station conducted a drive on the JU campus at about 1:00am on Sunday to detain the perpetrators.   
However, the accused along with their three associates fled away from the scene by breaking the lock of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.

Sagar, Sabbir, Hasan, and the accused Mustafizur Rahman are the followers of JU BCL president Akhtaruzzaman Sohel.  

BCL central committee in a press release permanently expelled the JU BCL international affairs secretary Mustafizur Rahman for his involvement with such activities disgraceful to the organisation.

As soon as the news of the rape spread on the campus, hundreds of students including left-leaning student bodies burst into protests and staged sit-in in front of the hall.

They demanded that the perpetrators be given exemplary punishment so that none can dare to commit such a barbaric act against women in the future.

The protesters also placed a four-point charter of demands including arresting the rapists within the next 24 hours and ensuring exemplary punishment, and resignation of the hall provost for allowing BCL men to run a torture cell inside the hall.

Terming the incident shocking and unacceptable, JU proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, ‘We will help the police for any kind of investigation inside the campus or any legal action against the accused.’
