EU delegation holds meeting with JASoD

DHAKA, Dec 9, 2023 (BSS) - The visiting Election Expert Mission of the European Union (EU) today held a meeting with Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASoD) President Hasanul Haq Inu at the latter's residence in the city.

During the meeting, they discussed about the country's situation ahead of the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) polls slated for January 7, said a press release.

JASOD General Secretary Shirin Akhter and Executive President Rabiul Alam, and EU Election Expert Mission's political expert Alexander Matus and Legal Rights Expert Rebecca Cox attended the meeting.

The release said that the EU delegation wanted to know about the constitution, electoral laws, caretaker government system, 12th JS polls situation, JASOD's history as a political party and its stance and role, and 14-party electoral alliance.

It said that party President Hasanul Haq Inu briefed the delegation about the matters and said that the rule of law remains established in the country as the judiciary often gives verdict against the executive division of the government to ensure justice for anyone affected by the executive division.

The 12th JS election is going to be held as per the constitution, Inu said, adding that the Election Commission (EC) is moving ahead to hold the polls independently and efficiently based on the powers and jurisdiction given by the country's constitution.

The government and the executive division are providing assistance to the EC as per the requirements of the commission, as per the constitution and laws, he said, adding that elections would have been more competitive if BNP had joined the polls, shunning the politics of terrorism and boycotting and resisting polls.

Inu hoped that the role of the EU as a development partner of Bangladesh and in strengthening the democratic system and institutions in the country will continue in the future.
