DHAKA, Oct 2, 2023 (BSS) - Newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Habibur Rahman today warned that no criminal whoever he or she is will be spared.
"It is important to eliminate crimes and illegal arms use in the metropolitan city, as the national elections approach," he told his maiden media briefing at DMP here.
He said necessary directions were already provided to bring criminals, who were released from jail through judicial process, under surveillance.
Rahman said the metropolitan police ensures security to the capital's 2.24 crore people round the clock, adding, "It is important to control illegal arms and crimes in the city before the national elections."
He assured that all DMP members especially police stations will ensure hassle-free service to city dwellers, saying police are always ready to ensure security to people and their properties with passion and professionalism.
The pattern of crimes is changed now due to development of technology, the DMP chief said, adding police is working in different ways to control cybercrime, which is now a new crucial issue instead of stealing, robbery and other traditional crimes, using latest technologies.
"Now police is capable enough to control any crime and make this city safer and better for dwellers. If we want to make the city a safe place, we need your (journalists) and city dwellers' cooperation," he added.
Rahman mentioned that Dhaka is a megacity and its population is around 2.24 crore.
"Policing is a big challenge and complex process. DMP always stands by the people and is performing duties and solving problems with efficiency and competence," he said.
He also said the routine work of the police is to control theft and robbery, maintain public order, and provide security to people's lives and property.
About easing of traffic jam in city, he said, "Densely populated Dhaka sees elevated expressways, flyovers, metro rail. Constriction of buildings is increasing but the number of roads is not increasing".
Dhaka needs 75 square km road but its accessible road is 28 sq. km, he said, adding: "So control of traffic congestion is a big challenge".
"Our manpower is 34 thousands for 2.24 crore people, but the DMP continues to discharge duties with efficiency and competence," he continued.
Beat and community policing are being strengthened to make a safer Dhaka and a better Dhaka, Rahman said.
Replying to a question, the new DMP commissioner said that bail is a matter of judicial process and a criminal can get bail from the court as per law.
"We are determined to bring criminals under book. We do not spare any criminal," he said.
Additional Police Commissioners AKM Hafiz Akhter, Dr Kha Mahid Uddin, Moha Ashrafuzzaman, Munibur Rahman, CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman, DMP Detective Branch (DB) chief Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and police officers of various ranks were present at the briefing.
