Students of 7 DU-affiliated colleges withdraw blockade

DHAKA, Aug 27, 2023 (BSS) - Following the assurance from the Dhaka University authorities, students of seven colleges affiliated to the university have withdrawn their seven-hours blocking programme around 6:45 pm at Nilkhet intersection in the capital.

"We are withdrawing the movement as the Dhaka University authorities gave us assurance of holding a meeting with the students to discuss the issue", said Shahriar Mahmud Opu, coordinator of the movement and also student of Dhaka College's English department.

"A meeting has been set up with the student on Tuesday to discuss the issue. Decision will be taken after the meeting over the issue", said DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (academic) Pro-VC Prof ASM Maksud Kamal.

Earlier, the students blockaded the intersection around 12.25pm bringing out a procession from TSC of Dhaka University to the Nilkhet intersection demanding to lower the minimum CGPA requirement for promotion to the next academic year.

The movement led to huge traffic congestion on Azimpur-Science Laboratory Road, mounting sufferings for pedestrians.

At least 13 students fell sick on the road and took treatment from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Some of them were also admitted to the DMCH.
