Chinese engineer’s body recovered from Bhairab River in Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 26, 2023(BSS): Police today recovered a body of a Chinese engineer from the Bhairab River here in the city.

The deceased was identified as Woang Siao Khui, 44, an electrical engineer of an under-construction power plant under Khalishpur Police Station in the city.

The 800-megawatt (MW) Rupsha Power Plant CCPP project is being constructed by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) in association with Chinese government in the defunct Khulna Newsprint Mill area in the city.

On information, Police recovered the floating body from the Bhairab River at around 9,00am, Sonali Sen, Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), confirmed to BSS.

A team of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Police surrounded the crime scene after recovery of the body, she said, adding that the body would be sent 0to the Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) for post mortem.

Tuhin Mia, an interpreter of the Chinese electrical company namely Sun dong-Sun long-Sun Wue, told BSS, the Chinese engineer joined the power plant about seven months back. He lived near the power plant area with his colleagues.

On August 24, the engineer went to a barber shop for cutting hair. He (Tuhin) received information through his colleague that the engineer did not return to their residence on that night, he said, adding that he later filed a general diary (GD) with Khalishpur Police Station on August 25.

He, however, said “Some employees of the company started searching him at different areas during last 24 hours and at last we found the floating body around 900am today at the Bhairab River while searching with an engine boat.

Al-Amin, safety officer and also an interpreter of the Chinese Company told BSS, the engineer joined the power plant in last February. He was a nice and labourer friendly officer.

Talking to BSS, Sayed Mushfiqur Rahman, Superintendent of Police of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), said “There were no marks of injury in his body primarily.
