Climate change affects normal life at coastal areas

DHAKA, Aug 25, 2021 (BSS) – A number of Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) from coastal region today said harmful effects of climate change force to bring public life under threat.

They mentioned that any natural disaster hampered normal life in the coastal areas, while addressing a meet the press at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the city.

Sundarbans and Coastal Protection Movement and Faith in Action, a non-government development organization, organised the event with Mir Mostaq Ahmed Robi, representative of coastal region and convener of Citizens' Forum in the chair.

Nikhil Chandra Bhadra, coordinator of the Sundarbans and Coastal Protection Movement conducted the programme, while Aktaruzzaman Babu of Khulna-6, Amirul Islam Milon of Bagerhat-4, SM Shahzada of Patuakhali-3 and Syeda Rubina Akter, a reserved seat MP and Advocate Gloria Jharna Sarkar spoke.

Among others, DRU President Morsalin Nomani, former general secretary of DRU Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo, General Secretary of National Committee for Protection of Waterways and Railways Ashish Kumar Dey, Representative of KNH Germany Moniruzzaman Mukul, Executive Director of Faith in Action Nripen Vaidya, Jasmine Prema, Mohan Kumar Mondol and Sakila Parveen were also present.

The MPs urged the government for taking effective steps quickly to overcome the natural crisis mitigate other prevailing crisis, as COVID-19 situation and the super cyclone Amphan and Yeas exacerbated the crisis.

They said storms and tidal surges caused floods, but now large areas of the coast are being flooded by normal tidal waters. As a result, the livelihood of the region is under threat.

Mir Mostaq Ahmed Robi said, "Not only the coastal areas are being inundated with tidal water but also water logging is taking place in Satkhira city." Therefore, in addition to sustainable embankments, water drainage system needs to be modernized.

While, Amirul Alam Milon said that the people of my constituency are still carrying impact of the Cyclone Sidr. “A long-term action plan will have to be taken along with sustainable embankments on the coast to protect against this panic,” he said.
