DHAKA, April 25, 2023 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP's) counter terrorism unit has arrested a top leader of newly-emerged militant outfit Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya from capital's Sabujbagh area.
The arrestee Md Sakib Bin Kamal is believed to be the IT wing chief of the militant group and has two pending cases against his name.
DMP sources said the militant leader was arrested in a raid conducted on Monday at around 7pm in front of Kamalapur School and College.
"Sakib, a BSC degree holder, was involved in teaching and freelancing. He used to apply his ICT knowhow for exchanging the encrypted messages between the militant group members. He joined militant activities in 2010 and joined neo-JMB in 2013," a DMP press release said.
Police sources further said Sakib came in contact with one Shamin Mahfuz, allegedly the spiritual leader of Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya in jail in 2015 and after coming out of prison in 2017, he actively joined the militant organization.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court today placed Sakib on four-day remand in an anti-terrorism act case filed with capital's Demra Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashek Imam passed the order as police produced Sakib before the court and pleaded to place him on 10-day remand in the case.
