Life-term convict arrested in city


  
DHAKA, March 28, 2023 (BSS) - Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a fugitive convict, who was sentenced to life-term imprisonment in a drug case, from the city's Shyampur area.
 
The arrestee was identified as Md Selim Talukder, 48, son of Hasmat Talukder, a resident of Sadar upazila in Shariatpur district.
 
Confirming the matter to BSS today, RAB-2 Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Fazlul Haque said that acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-2 arrested him from the Shyampur area, outskirts of the capital, at around 3pm on Monday.
 
He said that a case was filed against Selim on May 15, 2012 with Shyampur thana under the Narcotics Control Act. In that case, he served a few days in jail. Later, he went into hiding after securing bail.
 
On December 22 in 2022, Speedy Trial Tribunal-3, Dhaka's District and Sessions Judge sentenced him to life-term imprisonment and fined him Tk 10,000.
 
The court gave a verdict that he would have to stay in jail three months more if he cannot pay the aforesaid fine.
 
The RAB official said that the necessary legal action had been taken against him.
