RU forms 5-member committee to probe Saturday's incident

RAJSHAHI, March 13, 2023 (BSS) - Rajshahi University (RU) authority has constituted a five-member committee to unearth the reason behind Saturday's violent incident on the RU campus.

Prof Prodip Kumar Pandey, Administrator of Public Relation Office, today said the committee has been asked to place recommendations to prevent repetition of the incident.

Headed by Pro-vice-chancellor Prof Humayun Kabir , the committee has also been asked to submit its report within the next seven working days.

Other members of the committee are: Prof Tariqul Hassan (Chemistry), Prof Abdur Rashid Sarker (Economics), Shafiquzzaman Zoarder (Syndicate Member) and Dr Arifur Rahman (Assistant Proctor).
 
Meanwhile, the RU authority has imposed some restriction on entry and movement of the outsiders at the campus until further order aimed at thwarting another untoward incident.

Earlier, on Saturday afternoon, the Binodpur Bazar area, adjacent to RU campus, has turned into a warring spot when the clash between the students and local people erupted following a trifling matter. 
 
Within a few hours the violence spread to many other adjacent areas. The students took positions at Binodpur gate area, while the businessmen on the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway at Binodpur Bazar. The warring groups pelted stones and brickbats to each other injuring many of them. 
 
Police also lobbed teargas canisters and fired rubber bullets to disperse the agitated students. 
 
Additional police forces were deployed at the campus and its adjacent areas to contain the situation. Seven platoons of BGB were also posted to bring the situation under control.
 
However, the campus situation is totally normal at present.
