DHAKA, Feb 28, 2023 (BSS) - Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq today said the present government is committed to protect the freedom of press.
"The government would not formulate any law that goes against the constitution. That's why I am saying it again, Digital Security Act wasn't formulated to take away the freedom of press or freedom of speech. It was formulated only to tackle cyber crimes," he told a seminar organised by Broadcast Journalist Center (BJC) at International Mother Language Institute in the capital.
"Initially some questions were raised about this Digital Security Act and the government has taken action in this regard. We have tried to solve the problems after discussions with concerned parties including the Ministry of Home Affairs. Recently before accepting a case under DSA against a person, a top police official telephoned me to know whether they should accept the case and this is a progress as well," he added.
Anisul said the government is determined to protect journalists and the proposed Mass Media Employees Act is being formulated in this regard.
Presided over by BJC Chairman Rezwanul Haque, the seminar was also attended by Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) senior vice president Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Dhaka University Prof Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan and BJC member secretary Shakil Ahmed, among others.
