Experts for constructing quake-resilient infrastructures

RAJSHAHI, Feb 23, 2023 (BSS) - Referring to the recent destruction and massacre in Turkey and Syria scientists and researchers termed the earthquake risks as a big challenge towards sustainable development.

They unequivocally called for time-fitting measures for constructing earthquake-resilient infrastructures along with mitigating post-disaster losses.

They came up with the observations while addressing a daylong seminar titled "Earthquake situation in Bangladesh and Sustainable Development" at the Senate Building in Rajshahi University (RU) today.

RU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar addressed the opening session as the chief guest, while Pro-VC Prof Humayun Kabir and Treasurer Prof Obayedur Rahman Pramanik spoke as special guests with another Pro-VC Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam in the chair.

Engineering Geologist Meer Fazlul Karim from Geo-eastern Incorporation in the USA gave an overview on the issue while presenting his keynote styled "Understanding of Earthquake Scenario of Bangladesh for Sustainable Development and Building Safer Cities". 

He told the seminar that some regions of Bangladesh are prone to earthquakes so the time has come to remain alert in this regard.
