RANGPUR, Feb 12, 2023 (BSS) – A six-day Book Fair and Cultural Function began at the Independence Memorial premises on the campus of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) here today.
 
Socio-cultural organisations 'Gungun' and 'Ranon' of the university have jointly organized the fair that will remain open from 11 am to 8 pm daily from February 12 to February 17 next.
 
A total of 32 book publication houses, literary and cultural organisations have set up their stalls on the fairground.
 
Book reviews, instant lectures, recitations of poems, workshops and cultural functions will be arranged daily on the fair premises.
 
Vice-chancellor of BRUR Professor Dr. Hasibur Rashid formally inaugurated the fair by cutting ribbon at a function at the fair premises today.
 
Dean of the Faculty of Arts of BRUR and President of 'Ranon' Professor Dr. Tuhin Wadud presided over the function which was moderated by President of 'Gungun' and Associate Professor of the Department of Accounting of BRUR Umar Farooque.
 
Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies Professor Dr. Md. Matiur Rahman and General Secretary of Begum Rokeya University Teachers’ Association (BRUTA) Md. Asaduzzaman Mandal Asad addressed the function as special guests.  
 
Veteran politician Principal Nazrul Islam Hokkani, Director (In-charge) of the Office of the Student Affairs of BRUR Md. Nuruzzaman Khan, Treasurer of BRUTA Md. Ashanuzzaman and founding General; Secretary of “Gungun’ Afifa Ishraat Chetona also spoke.
 
The Vice-chancellor said the book fair will encourage both teachers and students to read different types of science and literature apart from academic books.
 
He especially called for maintaining the continuation of arranging such events in every educational institution to create interest among the new generation in reading books.  
 
“Everyone should read books for enriching knowledge to build a progressive nation in the spirit of the War of Liberation and uphold the spirit of the Language Movement that sowed the seed of the struggle for the ultimate national independence,” he said.
