8 Rohingyas get life term jail in Cox's Bazar drug case

COX'S BAZAR, Jan 30, 2023 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced eight Rohingyas to life term imprisonment in jail for keeping 200,000 pieces of Yaba tablets in a drug trafficking case in Teknaf upazila of the district in 2019.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Nishat Sultana delivered the verdict this afternoon.

The court also fined them Taka 100,000 each, in default, to suffer one-year more in jail each.

The Rohingya convicts are- Mohammad Dhilla, Rabi Alam, Mohammad Alam, Mohammad Shafiqul, Mohammad Noor, Noore Alam, Ali Ahmad and Nurul Amin, all residents of Rakhine State of Myanmar.

According to the details of the case, on September 19 in 2019, the Coast Guard members ordered to stop the movement of a fishing trawler in the sea adjacent to Chera Dwip of Saint Martin in Teknaf upazila but the driver of the trawler sped away and tried to escape. Coast Guard personnel chased the trawler and arrest them with 200,000 pieces of Yaba tablets.

The Coast Guard filed a case against eight Rohingyas in Teknaf police station on September 19, 2019 as a plaintiff.

Later, police submitted charge-sheet against them on February 2, 2020.

After examining witnesses, the court found them guilty and handed down the punishment today.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Faridul Alam confirmed the matter.
