Sajeeb Group chairman, 4 sons among 8 arrested over N'ganj factory fire

  NARAYANGANJ, July 10, 2021 (BSS) - Police arrested eight top officials of the Sajeeb Group, including its chairman and his four sons, over the Thursday's devastating fire at Sejan Food and Beverage Factory at Rupganj here that claimed at least 52 lives.

  The arrestees are: Sajeeb Group Chairman and Managing Director Md Abul Hashem, his four sons - Deputy Managing Director Hasib Bin Hashem (Sajeeb) and directors Tareq Ibrahim (Satej), Tawsif Ibrahim (Sheetal) and Tanjim Ibrahim; Sajeeb Group Chief Operating Officer Shahan Shah Azad, and Hashem Foods Limited Deputy General Manager Mamunur Rashid and its admin chief Salahuddin.

  Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Jayedul Alam confirmed this to BSS and said police arrested the eight from different areas.

  Earlier, police filed a murder case with Rupganj Police Station in this connection, he added.

  Allegations of not having fire safety, fault in constructing the building, shortage of stairs for movement from upper floor to lower ones and keeping the collapsible gate at third floor shut during the fire were brought in the case, the SP said.

  Jayedul said storage of chemical substances on the third floor of the building fueled the fire to become devastating, making huge loss of lives and damages.

  Besides, he said, three probe bodies have been formed by the district administration and the Fire Services. Police will take steps on the basis of the recommendations of the probe bodies, he added.

  "If needed, more cases would be lodged over the incident," the SP said.

  The devastating fire at the Sejan Food and Beverage Factory at Kornagop area of Rupganj upazila in the district left at least 52 death and more than 50 injured.
