THAKURGAON, July 28, 2026 (BSS) - Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that an effective social movement against drugs should be built to protect the young generation.
 
"Eradicating drugs from society is not possible through law enforcement and punitive measures alone. For this, active participation of people from all walks of life in the social movement against drugs must be ensured," he said. 
 
He said this while briefing journalists after an anti-drug public awareness meeting organised at the Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner's conference room on Tuesday afternoon to prevent drug abuse, increase public awareness and build social resistanc, a press release of the Rangpur Regional PID Office said this afternoon. 
 
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also BNP Secretary General, said that the government has strengthened anti-drug activities aiming at building a strong social movement through public participation to make this activity more effective. 
 
"The coordinated role of law enforcement agencies, families, educational institutions, social and cultural organizations and the mass media is very important in eradicating drugs from the society," he continued. 
 
Stressing on the need for extensive publicity and campaigning to prevent drugs, the minister said that if awareness is created about the dangers of drugs at every level of society, it will be possible to protect the young generation from this curse.
 
"Through this, it is possible to build a healthy, safe and drug-free society," he added. 
 
He called on the concerned organisations and media workers to play a more active role in raising public awareness about the harmful effects of drugs. 
 
Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Md Belal Hossain, Commanding Officer of Thakurgaon 50 BGB Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Akhlaq Hossain, District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali and government officials were present at the event.
