DHAKA, July 18, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Spokesperson Dr Mahdi Amin today said the government has been working relentlessly by attaching highest priority to ensuring transparency, good governance, public welfare and fulfilling the people's expectations.

"The government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has completed only 105 days, or five months, in office. In terms of time, this may not seem very long. But for a democratic government, every single day is an opportunity to fulfill the commitments made to the people," he said.

Mahdi, also an adviser to the Prime Minister, added: "Every moment is a test of responsibility and accountability, and every step is a new test of earning the people's trust."

He made the remarks at a press conference at the Karobi Hall of the PMO in the city's Tejgaon area this afternoon. Prime Minister's Press Wing organised the press conference, marking the completion of five months of the elected government.

The PMO spokesperson said, "We believe the confidence and trust of the people are the greatest strengths of any government. Therefore, we consider it our moral responsibility to keep the people informed about every initiative, every achievement, every reform and every challenge of the government."

After assuming office through the direct votes of the people, he said, the government has primarily given the highest priority to rebuilding democratic institutions and maintaining economic stability.

Measures to control commodity prices, restore discipline in the financial sector, recover laundered money and ensure cost-effective and corruption-free reviews of development projects demonstrate the government's strong commitment to good governance, Mahdi said.

Simultaneously, he said, rehabilitation of recent flood victims and the reconstruction of the damaged and looted health and education sectors are underway.

The PMO spokesperson said, "The government remains fully committed to building an inclusive, discrimination-free and prosperous Bangladesh based on the achievements made in a short period of five months."

Describing the people as the ultimate judges of the government's performance, Mahdi said, "The trust, support and constructive opinions of the people are the government's greatest source of inspiration for the journey in the days coming ahead."

After bringing an end to prolonged fascist rule, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman got the mandate to rebuild the collapsed state structure of the past, he said, adding, within a very short period after assuming responsibility, the Prime Minister has reached the highest level of public confidence.

"Over the past five months, the five aspects of multidimensional achievements- the trust, love and support of the people, the protection of the interests of people of all walks of life in the light of the election manifesto, the remarkable success in facing challenges in a short period of time, giving the highest priority to ensuring the people's freedom and protecting the sovereignty of the country, and the great leadership of the Prime Minister- have opened a new chapter in the political history of the country." the PMO spokesperson said.

At the beginning of his speech, Mahdi paid tribute to the martyrs of the July movement.

"Two years ago, at this very time, our beloved motherland witnessed a bloody chapter. To silence the voices of peaceful protesters demanding their legitimate rights, the fascist regime chose the path of killing through gunfire," he said, adding, the sacrifices of Abu Sayeed in Rangpur, Wasim Akram in Chattogram, Farhan Faiyaz in Dhaka, and countless innocent students and ordinary people geared up the movement.

The participation of people from all walks of life and all democratic political parties turned the movement into a mass uprising that succeeded to oust the fascist regime, Mahdi said.

Subsequently, he said, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-the party that suffered the highest number of enforced disappearances, killings, attacks, false cases and human rights violations over the past 16 years-came to power through a free, fair and impartial election to run the state.

"We pay our deep respects to all the martyrs and pray to Almighty Allah for the eternal peace of their souls," the PM's adviser said.

Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony conducted the press conference.

Prime Minister's Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, Speech Writer Mahfuzur Rahman, deputy press secretaries Md Suzauddhowla (Sujon Mahmud) and Shahadat Hossain Shadhin, and assistant press secretaries Asrofa Emdad, KM Nazmul Haque and Gazi Shahriar Pamy were present at the press conference.

The BNP government led by Tarique Rahman assumed office on February 17 following landslide victory in the February 12 elections. The press conference was organized, marking the completion of the government's first five months in office.
