Dhaka, July 12, 2026 (BSS) - Former Acting President, former Speaker, BNP Standing Committee Member and senior lawyer Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar has passed away.
He breathed his last at a private hospital in the capital at 4:19 am today, a press release from the Supreme Court said.
Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar was 94.
Barrister Jamiruddin was born on December 1, 1931, in Nayabari village of Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh district.
He is survived by one daughter and two sons. His son Barrister Muhammad Nawshad Zamir was elected Member of Parliament from Panchagarh-1 constituency in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad Election.
He obtained MA and LLB degrees from Dhaka University. Later, in 1961, he went to the UK for higher education and obtained the Barrister-at-Law degree from Lincoln's Inn, London.
After returning home, he joined the legal profession and established himself as a renowned expert in constitutional, civil and criminal law in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar served as the Speaker of the eighth National Parliament from October 28, 2001 to January 25, 2009.
He was one of the founding members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and had been a member of its Standing Committee since the party's inception.
He held various positions in the cabinets of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
At various times, he served as the State Minister for Public Works, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, State Minister for Land, the Minister of Education, and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
