DHAKA, May 28, 2026 (BSS) - Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of Muslims, was celebrated across the country with due religious fervor and festivity today.
The festival was celebrated in the spirit of devotion, sacrifice and submission to the will of the Almighty Allah.
Muslim devotees offered Eid prayers at Eidgahs and mosques across the country in the morning. Religious scholars and khateebs delivered sermons in those prayers highlighting the significance of Qurbani and the teachings of sacrifice in Islam.
After the prayers, devotees exchanged Eid greetings, strengthening the bonds of fraternity, brotherhood and harmony.
The main Eid congregation was held at the National Eidgah adjacent to the High Court premises in the capital this morning.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman offered Eid prayers along with hundreds of devotees at the National Eidgah.
After the prayers, they joined a munajat with the devotees seeking blessings of the almighty for Muslim Ummah as well the nation.
Chief Justice, cabinet members, Dhaka south city administrator, judges of the Supreme Court, parliament members, political leaders, diplomats, and high-ranking civil and military officials joined the Eid jamaat.
Khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek conducted the Eid prayers.
A special munajat, seeking divine blessings for peace, progress, and prosperity of Bangladesh, as well as the welfare of its people and the Muslim Ummah, was offered after the prayers.
Special security measures were taken centering the congregation.
In the capital, Eid congregations at the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram were held at 7 am, 8 am, 9 am, 10 am and 10:45 am.
Eid congregation was also held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban this morning.
Deputy Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Kayser Kamal, MP, Secretary of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, officials and employees of the Parliament Secretariat, and devotees from different walks of life joined the congregation.
In a video message recorded at Bangabhaban on the morning of Eid, President Shahabuddin called upon all to work together for building a just, democratic, non-communal and prosperous Bangladesh imbued with the ideals and values of the Eid-ul-Azha.
Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and his spouse Dr Rebecca Sultana exchanged Eid greetings at Bangabhaban with people from different walks of life.
Cabinet members, chief election commissioner (CEC), judges, cabinet secretary, chiefs of the armed forces, ambassadors of different countries, Bangladesh Bank governor, inspector general of police (IGP) and secretaries concerned to the President’s Office were present at the reception that began at 11am at Durbar Hall.
Distinguished personalities, senior politicians, writers, journalists, teachers, intellectuals and high-ranking civil and military officials, among others, also joined the programme.
On Eid-ul-Azha, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed warm greetings to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the people of Bangladesh.
In a message sent to Tarique Rahman, the Indian premier reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening people-centric cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
In the morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the graves of his parents at Zia Uddyan and offered munajat on the occasion of Eid. He also visited the grave of his younger brother Arafat Rahman Koko at Banani graveyard and offered prayer there.
Later, the premier visited the graves of the army officers killed in the BDR carnage and offered prayers at Banani Military Graveyard.
In the afternoon, the prime minister joined a grand feast hosted by Bangladesh Army’s 25th East Bengal Regiment also known as "Mrityunjoyi Ponchish" at Zia Colony in Dhaka Cantonment on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Officers and soldiers participated in the event.
After offering Eid prayers in the morning, Muslims across the country started slaughtering their sacrificial animals seeking the blessings of the Almighty Allah. Many devotees will also slaughter their sacrificial animals in the next two days.
All public and private offices are in long holidays from May 25 as the government announced weeklong vacation to facilitate people to celebrate the festival.
However, emergency services, including hospitals, healthcare, fire service, electricity, water, gas, internet and postal services, will remain operational during the holidays.
Officials and employees engaged in those sectors are continuing their duties as usual.
Media organisations also announced a five-day Eid holiday, resulting in no newspaper publication from May 27 to May 31.
To ensure smooth Eid journeys, the government took various measures, including keeping all CNG and filling stations open.
Authorities also warned of immediate action against passenger harassment and travel-related sufferings.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels are airing special programmes on the occasion.
Special meals were served at hospitals, orphanages, prisons and child care centres. Recreation centers across the country saw rush of visitors in the afternoon marking the festival.
In Kishoreganj, the 199th congregation of holy Eid-ul-Azha was held at 9am today at the country's largest and historic Sholakia Eidgah Maidan under a five-tier security arrangement. Devotees from neighboring districts and different parts of the country joined the congregation.
Another large Eid-ul-Azha congregation was held at the Gor-e-Shahid Boro Maidan in Dinajpur district town with enthusiasm and religious fervor at 8:30am today with the participation a massive number of devotees.
Gor-e-Shahid Central Eidgah Maidan spans nearly 22 acres of land. Devotee from Dinajpur as well as neighboring districts including Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Nilphamari and other nearby areas gathered to offer Eid-ul-Azha prayers at this massive congregation.
Our Chattogram office reports: Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated in a festive atmosphere with religious fervour and solemnity in the port city.
A total of 266 Eid congregations including at Jamiatul Falah Mosque were held in the city.
The practice of Qurbani commemorates the supreme devotion of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), who was prepared to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah's command.
The Almighty Allah later replaced Ismail (AS) with a sacrificial animal, symbolising the spirit of faith and sacrifice.
Eid-ul-Azha is also deeply linked with the holy Hajj. Eid was observed in Saudi Arabia yesterday as hajj pilgrims have already performed major rituals at Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina.
Many countries around the world celebrated Eid in line with Saudi Arabia.
