Govt. declares weeklong Eid holiday from May 25

DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) - The government today announced a weeklong holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha from May 25 but said emergency services would remain its purview.

“All government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private offices across the country will remain closed from Monday, May 25, 2026 to Sunday, May 31, 2026 on the occasion of upcoming Holy Eid-ul-Azha, 2026,” a public administration ministry statement said.

The announcement, however, readjusted the routine weekend ahead of the festival in view of the long holiday period saying all offices would remain open on Saturday on May 23, 2026 and on the subsequent day.

The ministry issued the notification under the Rules of Business which describes provisions of allocation of business among the different ministries and divisions.

The notification said that emergency services such as hospitals, electricity, water, gas and other fuels, fire service, ports, cleaning services, telephone and internet operations, postal services would be excluded from holiday schedule.

Employees related to these services will be excluded from the Eid holiday, particularly pointing out the services of doctors and employees engaged in medical services and vehicles and employees carrying medical equipment including medicines.

The notification said the Supreme Court and Bangladesh Bank would issue required directives on judicial activities and banking operations during the festival.

It also left the issue of allocating Eid holidays in private sector industrial establishments/factories and institutions to the ministry of labour and employment in accordance with the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006.
