DHAKA, April 28, 2026 (BSS) - Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced a comprehensive plan to modernise the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) and significantly expand its manpower to enhance maritime security and operational effectiveness.
Speaking at a programme marking Coast Guard Day 2026 and the 31st founding anniversary at its headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, he said the government is prioritising technological advancement within the force.
Three surveillance drones equipped with a ground control station have already been inducted, boosting monitoring capabilities across coastal and inland waterways, he said.
He noted that with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, construction of one multi-role response vessel and two offshore patrol vessels is progressing.
In addition, he said an agreement has been signed with Khulna Shipyard to procure bulletproof high-speed boats.
The minister also announced plans to establish a modern dockyard in Gazaria, Munshiganj, to strengthen maintenance and repair facilities.
A project is underway to replace nine ageing vessels with new patrol vessels to be built at local shipyards.
Looking ahead, he said the government plans to procure helicopters, advanced maritime surveillance systems, and rescue drones to further enhance rapid response and surveillance capabilities.
On manpower, he revealed that a proposal has been taken to increase the Coast Guard's strength to around 10,000 personnel, which is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency.
He further said that land acquisition is ongoing in Mirpur's Baunia area and Purbachal to address accommodation needs for Coast Guard members.
The Home Minister expressed optimism that these initiatives will transform the Bangladesh Coast Guard into a modern, well-equipped force capable of effectively safeguarding the country's maritime resources and coastal population.
He has also commended the Bangladesh Coast Guard for its vital role in maintaining law and order in the country's maritime and coastal areas, describing the force as a "symbol of trust" for the nation.
"You are aware that, following independence, the Bangladesh Coast Guard began its journey on February 14, 1995, as an independent paramilitary force inspired by the motto 'Guardian at Sea,'" the minister said.
He noted that the foundation for the establishment of the Coast Guard was laid under the leadership of then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during the BNP government, which later played a key role in the force's policy development, structural growth, and overall advancement.
"Since its inception, the Coast Guard has overcome numerous challenges and has emerged as a trusted institution among coastal communities and the general people," he added.
Highlighting its contributions, the Home Minister said the Bangladesh Coast Guard continues to play a unique and indispensable role in ensuring security across the country's maritime and riverine coastal regions.
He expressed sincere appreciation to all members of the force for their dedication and service.
