DHAKA, April 16, 2026 (BSS) - Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani today said the government has set a target to generate 10,000 megawatts of solar electricity by 2030 to address the energy crisis.

“For this purpose, the cabinet meeting discussed approval of the ‘Renewable Energy Policy 2025’, ‘facilitating investment in renewable energy projects’, and proposals for expanding renewable energy,” he told a press briefing at PID at the Secretariat here.

Earlier, a cabinet meeting was held this evening with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat.

In the briefing, the cabinet secretary said large-scale investment opportunities will be given not only for government land but also for private entrepreneurs to achieve this major energy target by 2030.

He said the current policy has been reviewed to make it more effective and investment-friendly, so that entrepreneurs can invest easily and ensure profitability. 

Ghani said the project will be implemented through private initiatives alongside government participation.

A draft committee has been formed for this purpose as the committee will finalize approval and begin work, he said, adding if necessary, the committee will quickly finalize laws and policies and start implementation.

He noted that along with solar power, wind energy and biogas were also discussed in the meeting. 

He also said that efforts are being made to make solar systems more modern and sustainable by emphasizing domestic production, overcoming current limitations.

The cabinet secretary said efforts are underway to keep the cost of solar electricity between Taka 4 to 8 per unit.

Ghani said that the cabinet also decided to declare November 7 as “National Revolution and Solidarity Day” as before. 

It will be observed as a Category “Ka” day, he said adding this day will now be observed with due respect as in the past and will be a public holiday.

He said that due to the previous 16 years of non-observance, the day will now be properly observed and will be a public holiday.

He further informed that June 6 will be observed every year as “National Rural Development Day.” It will be a Category “Kha” observance, meaning it will not be a public holiday, but will be celebrated nationally and internationally.
