DHAKA, April 5, 2026 (BSS) – Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today said mass media and social media play a crucial role in shaping people’s mindset, as their influence continues to grow in the modern world.

“Establishing ethical control over these powerful platforms has become one of the major challenges of our time,” he said while addressing as the chief guest the inaugural ceremony of six short-term courses at the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute.

The minister said people are naturally inclined to listen to, understand and believe others, and this trust allows influential individuals to shape public thinking.

“While this influence can play a positive role, it also carries the risk of misuse,” he observed.

He said those working in media, film and creative sectors now bear a significant responsibility, warning that failure to uphold ethics and professional standards could make these powerful platforms harmful to the society.

The minister also said the government is working to make creative and training institutions more modern, expanded and effective in the future.

Highlighting the impact of cinema, he said films are a powerful medium capable of making people laugh, cry and deeply influence their emotions.

He urged stakeholders to use this strength for the welfare of humanity and civilization.

The minister also advised the course participants to give equal importance to ethical values and sense of responsibility alongside acquiring technical knowledge.
After the programme, the minister formally inaugurated the six short-term courses and thanked all concerned.

Chaired by Chief Executive Officer of the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute Abu Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin, it was also addressed by Director General of the National Institute of Mass Communication Mohammad Hiruzzaman, Bangladesh Betar Director General ASM Zahid, Chairperson of Film and Television Department of Jagannath University Dr. Shah Md. Nister Jahan Kabir, and Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board SM Abdur Rahman.
