DHAKA, April 4, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the party would move towards holding its council very soon.
"Very soon we will try to take the party towards the council," he told journalists after a meeting of the party's standing committee at the BNP chairperson's political office in Gulshan at around 8:00 pm.
The meeting, the first after the election, was chaired by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Mirza Fakhrul said the issue of how to proceed towards the party council at the earliest possible time was the main focus of the discussion. He added that the meeting was entirely organisational in nature.
"Our party chairman and Prime Minister convened the standing committee meeting to continue regular organisational activities," he said.
He said the Prime Minister also sought the opinions of the standing committee members on the programmes undertaken during the 47 days since the formation of the government.
Members provided various suggestions, while discussions were also held on expanding the party's political and organizational activities.
Replying to a question on whether the council could be held before Eid al-Adha, Mirza Fakhrul said, "There is no possibility of holding the council before Eid. We need at least a few months to complete all preparations."
The meeting was attended by standing committee members including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmod Tuku, Selima Rahman (virtual) and AZM Zahid Hossain.
Standing committee member Mirza Abbas could not attend the meeting as he is undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital.
