LAKSHMIPUR, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Water Resources Minister Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee today said the unfinished canal excavation works initiated by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman will be completed under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
"The canal excavation programme was a revolutionary initiative of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, but it remained unfinished. Completing it according to President Zia's original plan will help build a self-reliant Bangladesh," he said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the canal re-excavation in the Kafilatoli area of Uttar Hamsdi Union in Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
Anee said the government is implementing irrigation systems in agriculture and undertaking excavation and re-excavation of rivers, canals, and other water bodies to enhance water flow, protect biodiversity, and reduce waterlogging.
He added that these measures are expected to bring a transformative change to the country's agricultural sector.
The minister also highlighted the government's ongoing social initiatives, including the distribution of family cards under a pilot programme, which will gradually cover the entire country.
He noted that farmers' cards will be distributed on Pahela Baishakh, stressing that the government is committed to fulfilling public demands and expectations.
Lakshmipur-2 constituency lawmaker Abul Khayer Bhuiyan presided over the function.
BNP lawmaker of Lakshmipur-1 Shahadat Hossen Selim and Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan, among others, were present at the event.
