SYLHET, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Industries, Jute and Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir today said the government has taken emergency measures to conserve electricity amid the ongoing global situation.
"The current situation is global, not unique to Bangladesh. Everyone should follow all government measures, including electricity-saving initiatives, in a disciplined manner," he told journalists in Sylhet.
The minister arrived in the city on a brief visit and met local business representatives at his residence around 4:00 pm.
He urged shop owners to keep their establishments closed during the 6:00 pm peak electricity demand period to help reduce pressure on the power grid.
"Many countries adjust their clocks for daylight saving. Likewise, we are adopting precautionary measures in response to the emergency situation," he added.
Replying to a question about industrial production, he said most factories operate on gas, and production planning is done after ensuring adequate gas supply, which has been secured by the Ministry of Energy.
He also noted that a slowdown in global consumption has affected exports worldwide. "We export ready-made garments, and the decline is not unique to Bangladesh; other competing countries are also facing similar challenges," he said.
Among others, Sylhet city BNP president Rezaul Hasan Qoyes Lodi, former president Nasim Hossain, and local party leaders and activists were present at the event.
