DHAKA, March 25, 2026 (BSS) - Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani today said the government has adequate reserves of fuel oil so that the Prime Minister has instructed the concerned authorities to ensure a stable supply of fuel.

He made the remarks while briefing journalists today after a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat here.

The cabinet secretary said the reserve is currently sufficient. “Where earlier we used to maintain a reserve for about 15 days, now we have reserves for nearly a month,” he added.

He said as public confidence returns, the government plans to expand the reserve even further in the near future, so that any potential energy shocks can be managed.

Ghani said a meeting on the energy situation was held this morning, attended by ministers and officials concerned.

The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to take necessary measures regarding energy.

The cabinet secretary said that cabinet meetings are usually scheduled for Thursdays. However, since Thursday falls on March 26, which has several national events, the meeting was held today instead.

He said five issues were discussed in the meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, members recalled black night of March 25 when genocide was carried out by occupation Pakistani forces.

They also remembered that this led to the declaration of independence and the start of the Liberation War. Prayers were offered for the martyrs of the Liberation War.

He said five agenda were discussed as part of constitutional obligations. The first was the draft amendment to the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Supplementary Duty Act 2026, which received approval in principle and final.

He said drafts of two finance-related laws, reflecting the expenditures of the fiscal year ending in July, along with revised final expenditures, got approval in principle and final.

Another item was the draft amendment to a financial ordinance, which also received approval in principle and final, he said.

The cabinet secretary said this ordinance is part of the annual financial framework for the 2025–26 fiscal year under Articles 86 and 27 of the Constitution, and revenue has been collected under it since June 26, 2025.

He explained that taxes are collected under specific laws, and to convert the ordinance into an act, the draft Finance (Amendment) Act for the 2025–26 fiscal year was given final approval at a special cabinet meeting, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

He said among the 133 laws passed during the previous cabinet’s tenure, a decision has been made to convert five of them into acts. Necessary procedures will be followed, and these will be presented in Parliament soon, he said.
