DHAKA, Mar 24, 2026 (BSS) - Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has expressed optimism that traffic congestion in the capital will be significantly reduced by the end of April through the implementation of short-term measures.

Speaking to reporters after a high-level meeting on "Dhaka City Traffic Congestion and Traffic Management Modernization," the minister today said the government has taken a comprehensive approach to tackle the city's persistent traffic problems.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at Bangladesh Secretariat here.

Salahuddin Ahmed stated that detailed discussions were held on short, medium, and long-term strategies to improve traffic management.

Representatives from key institutions-including Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the two city corporations, the Home Ministry, RAJUK, BUET, and other relevant agencies-participated in the meeting.

"We will be able to implement the short-term plans by the end of April. As a result, the traffic congestion problem in Dhaka city will be largely resolved," he said.

The minister added that a formal resolution outlining the immediate measures will be announced soon.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize traffic systems, including the automation of traffic signals using locally developed technology.

"Currently, seven automated signals are operational. Within a week, six more intersections will be brought under the system. Eventually, around 120 signal points across Dhaka will be automated in phases," he noted.

Ahmed, also a BNP Standing Committee Member, further expressed hope that the implementation of medium- and long-term plans would ensure sustainable and comprehensive development of Dhaka's traffic management system.
