PM directs to keep Dhaka volunteers ready for earthquake: Dulu

DHAKA, March 1, 2026 (BSS) – Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities concerned to keep Dhaka-centric volunteers ready to tackle any possible earthquake.

He said this while talking to journalists after meeting with the Prime Minister at the Secretariat this morning, according to a press release of the ministry. 

The Disaster Minister said the Prime Minister has given several directives, particularly in view of the recent earthquakes that occurred in different places last month, asking to keep volunteers prepared centring Dhaka.

The Prime Minister has also instructed to develop a model similar to that of the coastal areas, he said, adding that in particular, they have been asked to identify various play grounds and schools in Dhaka city to assemble people during the emergencies.

Asadul Habib Dulu continued that the Prime Minister has also given instructions to expedite procurement of necessary equipment and to work with other ministries to create awareness. 

He went on, saying “We will work on these issues and hold a follow-up meeting again on the 11 next.” 

Mentioning that discussions were held on capability building, the minister said “We have sent our required equipment for procurement to the Armed Forces Division. Some have been given to the Fire Service and Civil Defence. 

Various issues were discussed. We will sit again on the 11th to decide how we will proceed on these matters.”

He added that there is a national council to advise on disaster management where detailed discussions on earthquake preparedness will be held.
