DHAKA, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified security measures along the country’s border areas ahead of the forthcoming 13th national parliamentary election to ensure a peaceful, free, fair and credible polling environment slated for February 12.
BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui told a recent media briefing that the force is fully prepared to carry out its constitutional responsibilities in a professional, disciplined and politically neutral manner.
The BGB chief said more than 37,000 BGB members will be deployed across the country in 489 out of 495 upazilas during the election period, while BGB alone will perform duties in 61 border upazilas.
In addition, based on risk assessments, BGB personnel will be deployed as mobile and static forces in 300 parliamentary constituencies.
He said all necessary training, special briefings, legal instructions, code of conduct sessions and simulation exercises have already been completed.
Special emphasis has been placed on professionalism, restraint and lawful conduct in dealing with any situation.
To respond swiftly to emergencies, arrangements have been made to deploy BGB helicopters, Quick Response Forces (QRF), Rapid Action Teams (RAT), K-9 dog squads, drones and body-worn cameras.
Highlighting Cox’s Bazar’s importance as a major tourist destination and its 271-kilometer border with Myanmar, the BGB DG said heightened vigilance has been ensured to prevent smuggling, illegal infiltration, drug and arms trafficking. Potential security risks related to the Rohingya population have also been taken into special consideration.
Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury had earlier instructed the BGB to enhance security along the borders for ensuring a free, fair, impartial, peaceful and credible election.
BGB has also strengthened border security in Rajshahi Division alongside other parts of the country’s border.
BGB Rajshahi Sector Commander Colonel Syed Kamal Hossain said extensive security measures have been adopted in view of the election.
Under the Rajshahi Sector, which covers 7 districts, 62 upazilas and one City Corporation, a total of 146 platoons will be deployed from 65 base camps as mobile and striking forces across 37 parliamentary constituencies.
Additionally, 10 striking reserve members will remain on standby at each of the 76 Border Out Posts (BOPs).
Overall, more than 4,000 BGB personnel will be engaged in election duties in the Rajshahi Sector alone. Helicopters will also remain on standby to ensure rapid deployment of forces in case of any emergency.
Officials at BGB said that the use of modern technology has been increased to suppress crime and maintain stability in border areas. Regular coordination meetings have also been held with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to ensure calm along the border.
They expressed optimism that the upcoming election will be held peacefully through coordinated efforts of the government, Election Commission, law enforcement agencies and the public.
