RANGPUR, Jan 10, 2026 (BSS)- Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that during the 15 years rule of past Awami League regime police have done many anti-people acts.

“The police were developed as party police being deviated from their principles,” he said while talking to reporters after participating in a special welfare meeting with police officers at the Rangpur Police Lines School and College auditorium today.

The IGP said that tragic incidents took place in this country in July-August 2024 when a large number of protesters lost their lives and became martyrs.

“Responsibility of those incidents came on us due to some greedy and partisan members of the force. We are trying to come out of that disgrace and restore its previous glorify again,” he said.

“We will not say that we’re 100% successful, but there is no lack of our efforts,” the IGP said adding that 100% crime control cannot be achieved anywhere.

Baharul Alam said, “Death of Sharif Osman Hadi has shaken entire nation. It has brought a responsibility upon us to address the law and order problem properly. We are trying to do this.”

Referring to several murders taken place in the Khulna region he said police have been able to detect most of the killers.

In response to a question, Baharul Alam said, it is our responsibility to keep the law and order stable ahead of the coming elections.

“In this task Bangladesh Police is not alone, the army, navy, air force, BGB and Ansar members are with us,” he added.

The IGP said that there are government instructions to install CCTV cameras in every polling station. In addition, an initiative has been taken to use body-worn cameras in a total of 24,000 polling stations.

He sought the cooperation of all concerned to hold the elections in a fair, impartial and festive atmosphere.

About the criticism on Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2 the IGP said, “We are trying to work as objectively as possible. Whoever is potentially a threat for the election, we are trying to bring him under the law.”
