THAKURGAON, Jan 9, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today described BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's upcoming visit to Thakurgaon as a personal goodwill visit.
He said Tarique Rahman will come here to pay tribute to the martyrs of the July mass uprising and offer prayers at their graves. Later, he will attend a large dua mahfil seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Begum Khaleda Zia.
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks at his residence in the Kalibari area of the district this morning.
He said, "This time, the election and the referendum will be held on the same day. The reforms brought under the referendum are basically a continuation of our earlier activities. Reform is an ongoing process, and I don't think there is any reason to say no."
Regarding the recent university student union elections, he said, "University elections have never had an impact on national elections, and I hope they will not have an impact this time either."
Mirza Fakhrul said, "During the previous government, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were not given the opportunity to carry out organisational activities in universities. They were not allowed to enter academic premises or promote political statements among students. I hope the democratic environment will return to university campuses."
The BNP Secretary General said, "BNP has worked in the past to develop neglected regions. From that perspective, our leader Tarique Rahman will certainly give due importance to the issue and, if elected, we will work for the development of neglected regions, including the northern region."
District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali and other party leaders were present.
