THAKURGAON, Jan 8, 2026 (BSS) – BNP leaders and activists and people from all walks of life in the northern district have been eagerly waiting to welcome BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is set to visit Thakurgaon next week after a long 23 years.
There is a great excitement among the BNP and Thakurgaon residents ahead of Tarique Rahman’s arrival here. In the past several years, he was virtually involved in important BNP programmes in the district from London.
According to district BNP sources, Tarique Rahman is visiting Thakurgaon to pay tribute to Raihanul Hasan, Al Mamun, Sahan Parvez and Rakibul Hasan, who were killed in the July-August uprising (2024), and to participate in the memorial meeting and prayer mahfil of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Sources said Tarique Rahman will arrive in Thakurgaon on Monday (12 January) night and will stay at the guest house of the BURO Training Centre-Thakurgaon.
The next day, Tuesday, at around 10:00 am, he will visit the grave of Al Mamun, who was killed in the July-August uprising. Although the graves of three other people killed in the uprising were scheduled to be visited, due to time and schedule constraints, the district BNP said that tributes will be paid only at Al Mamun's grave.
Then, the BNP Acting Chairman will participate in a memorial meeting and prayer mahfil for former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School grounds at around 11:00 am.
He will address the leaders and activists there. After finishing the programme, he will leave for the neighboring district of Panchagarh on the same day.
District BNP General Secretary Poygam Ali said, "He will come to Thakurgaon by road on January 12. So the exact time of his arrival in the city cannot be confirmed right now. He (Tarique Rahman) last came to Thakurgaon for a blanket distribution programme in the winter of 2003."
He further said, "The arrival of Tarique Rahman again after 23 years is a great joy for the leaders and activists even for the general masses. On this occasion, we have held several preparatory meetings. We have informed the administration about security.”
He added, “Although there is no opportunity for a large public meeting due to the election code of conduct, we are ready to successfully implement the programme through a prayer mahfil in memory of national leader Begum Khaleda Zia."
However, Tarique Rahman has been involved in various important programme virtually in the district several times. Most recently, on September 7, 2025, he delivered a guiding speech as the chief guest at the BNP Thakurgaon district unit bi-annual conference.
Thakurgaon Police Superintendent Belal Hossain said that the police administration has taken all necessary security measures to maintain overall law and order in the district ahead of the Tarique Rahman's visit.
The district police is on the highest alert to avoid any untoward incident, he added.
